Kingsley Gate Partners Galaxy Of Leaders Conference Moves To Mumbai

The third roundtable lunchtime discussion, held by Kingsley Gate Partners as part of their Galaxy of Leaders conferences, was hosted at The Living Room in the Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai, on Wednesday, November 10th.

Prominent professionals, including chief executives, country heads, managing directors and HR heads, of top companies across industries including financial services, healthcare, mass media, consumer goods, insurance and real estate, formed the panel of attendees for this discussion.

The conversation, titled ‘Is your CHRO yaour next CEO,’ involved discussing and debating the merits of increasing the scope of responsibilities of HR functions in organizations thereby increasing the accountability of HR in the performance of a business.

In recent times there has been a call to increase the scope of responsibilities of HR. As a result, CHROs are now being considered as likely successors to their CEOs. However, although conversations in this direction have started, there are still some obstacles that come in the way. As per Anuj Puri, the Chairman and Country Head for JLL, one such impediment is that HR tends to get diluted. This happens when new talent comes in and does not want to approach HR as they prefer to approach other functional managers. This makes HR viewed as a secondary function instead of a leadership and strategic functions.

The conversation also featured suggestions for practical steps to ease the transition in a way that is comfortable for the executive and profitable for the organization. Prabir Jha, the Global Chief People Officer for Cipla, suggests that the best way to do so would be to give an HR leader the opportunity to undertake responsibilities in other functions. He says, “You cannot ascertain the ability of an HR executive to perform in a sales or a leadership role unless they are given the opportunity to actually perform in the role. Stereotypes are best destroyed then.”

Further elaborating on this suggestion, Vikram Bector, the Group CHRO for the Piramal Group, says “Identify potential leadership talent and put them in roles with P&L responsibility.”

This discussion is one of four being held in four cities in the Asia-Pacific region, including Singapore, Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi by Kingsley Gate Partners.
