Kingsley Gate Partners Hosts Their Final “Galaxy Of Leaders” Conference-2018 In New Delhi

Kingsley Gate Partners concluded their ‘Galaxy of Leaders’ Conference -2018 with the third and final roundtable discussion over lunch at ‘The Trident’ in Gurgaon on Thursday, 19th April.

The event brought together chief executives, country heads and HR leaders from prominent companies across industries including financial services, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, technology and consumer goods and services.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Have you hired a brilliant jerk?”

The session provided a unique lens on the topic, uncovering some of the best practices adopted by top companies as well as insights into the pragmatic methods adopted by industry veterans to overcome the challenges of hiring a ‘brilliant jerk’, a term popularized by Reed Hastings, in 2009.

The challenges of hiring a brilliant jerk remain largely unaddressed and shrouded in challenges and complexity within organizations today. Companies usually end up paying a much higher price in bringing certain brilliant employees on board, who are worth their weight in gold from a skills perspective, but sooner or later end up being terrible cultural misfits with an organization.

Siraj Chaudhry, Chairman at Cargill India, remarked that the term “brilliant jerk” was relative and its perception could vary according to the situation. For instance, in a purely results-driven environment, it’s essential to have such folks who could shake things up. Managing them was similar to like riding a tiger and it’d always do good to have the next plan of action ready once they had delivered on their purpose.

Anuja Beri, Director, Global Business Services at The Boston Consulting Group, affirmed that reaching out to candidates directly while hiring always had its own set of biases. She espoused her faith in search firms due to the data element and the science employed in the entire process. She accentuated the fact that she’d never hire in haste, especially for key positions and would rather prefer the succession planning process for as long as the organization was comfortable with it. “The whole should be more than the sum of the parts”, she said

The participants presented their views and perspectives on ways to avoid hiring a brilliant jerk and shared their experiences of handling such folks which attracted compelling arguments and interesting viewpoints.

This discussion was the last among the three held in 3 cities in India – Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi, by Kingsley Gate Partners.
